Tofino Chamber Stands Up For Staffed Lighthouses

An organization representing about 275 Tofino and Ucluelet businesses is standing up for staffed lighthouses on Canada’s west coast.

The Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce’s board voted this week to write the Senate Committee for Fisheries and Oceans, asking the federal government to keep lighthouses staffed.

Gord Johns, the chamber’s executive director, said the board decided to hold an emergency, electronic vote on the issue Wednesday.

“By Wednesday evening, we had unanimous support from the board to push forward and send the letter,” said Johns.

Watchful eyes are needed: Lighkeepers rescue kayakers.

When disaster strikes at sea and all hope to save yourself is running out, there's nothing more welcome to a someone who is close to succumbing to the cold and the relentless beating of the waves than to hear a human voice nearby assuring you that you're going to be OK.

Such an incident happened to me in the spring of 2005 while kayaking in the open ocean off of Tofino with my nephew Paul.
