The Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE) represents Canadian light-keepers and has been fighting the de-staffing of lighthouses for many years now. Our light-keeper members worked diligently to bring the public safety case forward to the marine, aviation and fisheries stakeholders who came out strongly in support of maintaining staffed lighthouses.

Lightkeeper Steve Bergh was a father, fisherman, loyal friend and strong advocate for staffed lighthouses on the West Coast.

Bergh, 60, died Monday in hospital of cancer. He'd been diagnosed less than two weeks before he died.

"He lived life to the fullest and he had no regrets," said Alice Woods, his wife of 37 years.

When Bergh got the devastating news that he was not going to recover, he looked at friends and family gathered in the hospital room and declared himself a lucky man.

But those who knew Bergh believed they were the lucky ones.

The fight to preserve Canada’s staffed lighthouses, which began almost three decades ago, took on new momentum after keepers learned last September that the government was planning to fully automate the country’s remaining manned light stations.

That news was enough to prompt Steve Bergh, who has been a keeper at Chatham Point light station on northeastern Vancouver Island for the past 20 years, to cancel plans to retire in order to throw his weight behind efforts to prevent the move.

“I felt a responsibility to the users,” says Bergh, also president of B.C. Lightkeepers Local 20232.

Climbing a tight spiral of 37 steps to her cupola overlooking the eastern entrance to Juan de Fuca Strait, Meredith Dickman is rewarded with a 360-degree view unrivalled by the million-dollar waterfront homes in nearby Oak Bay.

From here, at the top of her lighthouse, Ms. Dickman keeps an eye on the massive cargo vessels, ferries, fish boats and kayakers that test the inconsistent waters of the strait.

Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans

Steve Bergh, President, BC Lightkeepers: Good evening, senators. I am the President of the BC Lightkeepers Local 20232 and have been a lightkeeper for 27 years. I am also a fisherman with 38 years’ experience. As a result, I have a good working knowledge of both the capacity of lightkeepers services to mariners and the fishermen's appreciation for the services provided by lightkeepers. I understand the navigational tools used by mariners and their benefits and limitations.
