Canadians want to protect their iconic lighthouses. These landmarks bring alive our past, aid our boats and aircraft in the present, and could enhance our community life and regional revenues in the future. But how to preserve them?

About 50 lighthouses still employ on-site lightkeepers, and the Canadian Coast Guard has no present plans to do away with them.

Members of the Canadian Lightkeepers Association want to shine a light on the fact that when a committee of Senators comes to Nanaimo next week, it has no plans to hear the public's concerns about the federal government's plan to automate lighthouses.

The Senate Fisheries Committee plans to hold a meeting Nov. 17 in Nanaimo but where and the exact time are only known to those who have received an invitation to make a presentation to the committee, presided over by N.L. Senator Bill Rompkey, said Gabriola association director Ivan Bulic.

Senator Bill Rompkey says they're hearing that lighthouses are vital for safety and as heritage landmarks.

There are 23 staffed lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador and 27 in British Columbia. In the face of a fierce backlash, Ottawa has put its plan to remove lighthouse keepers on hold.

The committee reviewing a federal decision to destaff lighthouses is awaiting funding for a tour of the West Coast, but chairman Bill Rompkey said he’ll visit one way or another.

The committee expects to hear about a revised budget later this month, after an earlier costing was rejected.

“I want to reassure people we are serious about saying we are coming,” said Rompkey.

Senator Bill Rompkey says he fully intends to visit lighthouses and their keepers in B.C., even if the Senate committee he heads doesn't receive funding for members to travel here.

Rompkey told the Nanaimo Daily News this week that he "wouldn't have anything to do" with a final report on the services the nation's lighthouse keepers provide without face-to-face meetings with B.C.'s keepers to give them the opportunity to discuss their concerns and hear delegations on their own turf.
