An Island couple is spearheading a community group to take over the Covehead lighthouse.

The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced last year P.E.I. lighthouses would be decommissioned and said that community groups have first dibs to take them over.

There have been no proposals to take over any of the P.E.I. lighthouses declared surplus by the federal government earlier this year.

In May, all the lighthouses in Canada owned by the federal government went on the block. Community groups have been asked to tell Parks Canada if they're interested in taking ownership of any of them. So far, there hasn't been a single proposal from P.E.I.

Carol Livingstone, president of the P.E.I. Lighthouse Society, said there is no need to panic, but there is cause for concern.

Officials with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans say no active lighthouses in Canada will go dark, although nearly 500 of them have been declared surplus property.

A notice with a list of surplus lighthouses — 488 active and 488 inactive — was posted on the department's website on May 27.

It's now up to individuals, municipalities and community-based non-profit groups to try to take over the surplus lighthouses through a petition to Parks Canada.

The new owner would be responsible for ongoing maintenance costs for the structure.
