One of the iconic symbols for not only the region but perhaps Canada is among the nearly 1,000 lighthouses that the federal government has decided it no longer wants to maintain. Swallowtail Lighthouse on Grand Manan Island is among the 32 active lighthouses and 65 inactive ones in New Brunswick and some 970 lighthouses throughout Canada that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has declared surplus to its needs.

But the distance between wanting to save a lighthouse and actually doing it can be immense without the money to do so — just ask the Cape Jourimain Nature Centre.

The Cape Jourimain lighthouse was built in 1870, and now stands on the grounds of the non-profit nature centre located near the New Brunswick base of the Confederation Bridge.

The elegant 72-foot tall tower is a major draw for the nature centre's almost 20,000 visitors each year, but the structure continues to deteriorate.
