Saugeen Shores will commence negotiations with the federal government regarding the purchase the four lighthouses in the municipal limits, including Chantry Island.

This process began in 2007 when council supported a recommendat ion to begin discussions with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans regarding the purchase of Chantry Island, Saugeen River Back Range Light and McNabb Point Lighthouse. These were all set to be deemed surplus to the government's needs.

Since then, a fourth lighthouse, located at the mouth of the Saugeen River, has been deemed surplus.
