A plan announced earlier this year by the Conservative government aims to shut down 1,000 lighthouses and declare them as “surplus property”. The Decision will affect lighthouses in every region of the country, from Atlantic Canada to British Colombia, Ontario, and the Arctic. This decision will leave the costs of maintaining these lighthouses to the communities who may not be able to afford it. This will result in the degradation of these lighthouses which are a symbol to al Canadians.
