Dear Ivan,

I have a lot to learn as a Senator, and was far too hasty in stating that I was “convinced
that we should be moving in the direction of de-staffing lighthouses.”

The information we had received, I now realize, was incomplete. Rest assured that I have

Hello. I work for Senator Bill Rompkey, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans. I note on your Lightkeeper website a statement suggesting that the Committee, in its lighthouse study, might not be visiting B.C. I don’t know how that idea got started. In any case, Senator Rompkey corrected it in the media last week, as you’ll see below.

I am also a fisherman with 38 years’ experience. I understand the navigational tools used by mariners and their benefits and limitations.

Lighthouse keepers on Vancouver Island fear the federal government
will move ahead with plans to eliminate their jobs.

The plan to destaff lighthouses on both Canadian coast would include
the structure on Nanaimo's Entrance Island.

Steve Bergh, president of B.C. Lightkeepers Local 20232, said that the
ongoing review of the services provided to lighthouse staff members by
a Senate standing committee in Ottawa (expected to be competed this
fall) has so far been dominated by presentations in favour of
destaffing.
