Future of local lighthouses uncertain.

Several groups in West Prince have come forward with proposals to save local lighthouses, but two historic ones in the Summerside area are still up for grabs.

The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans is divesting of the lighthouses it owns across the country, and interested groups have until the end of May to apply to take over the buildings.

But so far according to its website, Parks Canada has received applications from just five P.E.I. groups seeking to designate a heritage lighthouse.

The Hon. John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North and Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development is reminding Constituents of the process through which communities can support heritage status of federal lighthouses.

In the midst of its 10th anniversary celebrations, Cape Jourimain Nature Centre finds itself battling to save one of its popular attractions.

The 140-year-old lighthouse on the grounds of the nature centre was declared as surplus by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans in May 2010, along with approximately 490 other inactive lighthouses across the country.

Cape Jourimain Nature Centre, which operates as a non-profit organization, now faces a dilemma in determining if they can take the appropriate steps to save the lighthouse.

Four major Nfld lighthouse attractions denied funding

The Gulf News has learned four tourist attractions on the southwest coast have been denied Job Creation Fund dollars to operate this season. At least two will remain closed for the season.

The Rose Blanche Lighthouse, Burnt Islands Hook and Line Interpretation Centre, Misery Point Fish Livyer’s Station and the Cape Ray Lighthouse were all shut out of funding. Both lighthouses have confirmed they will stay closed.
